Since its invention, photography has framed our visual culture as well as our spatial knowledge and its organization. It has forged the production and the ways of looking at other images that are employed in order to organize, circulate and teach spatial information. Despite the fact that digital photography opens multiple possibilities, I will argue that it brings forth new impossibilities too. I will trace how the imagination has coped with some of the impossibilities that photography introduced in different periods of time. This exercise may prompt our imaginations to not even expected new possibilities while creating and working with images. La fotografía está inscripta en nuestra cotidianeidad y atraviesa las formas de aprehender el mundo: fija, comunica y moldea nuestras experiencias. Desde su invención, este dispositivo ha configurado nuestra cultura visual, así como el conocimiento espacial y su propia organización. Asimismo, la fotografía ha modelado la producción y los modos de mirar otros registros visuales empleados para ordenar, difundir y enseñar la información espacial. En un período en el cual la fotografía digital se afirma como el reino de las posibilidades, tal vez pueda resultar paradójico sostener que ella también entraña un conjunto de obstáculos. Propongo, a modo de ensayo, trazar una serie de imposibilidades que la fotografía, en tanto técnica y práctica, ha presentado y que, en distintos momentos históricos, la imaginación ha dirimido. Imposibilidades que lejos de obturar el deseo incluso lo han potenciado.
