All information was obtained from the Brazilian Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF), who provides data for all paved federal motorways. Statistical analyses showed that almost all types of recorded accidents had significant reduction after the road work was completed. Nevertheless, we have also noticed an increasing number of accidents during road work due to vehicles that did not respect safe distance. Finally, we can conclude that the number of accidents decreased after the improvement road work was finished and may justify the implementation of similar improvements in further urban areas with critical accident numbers. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os acidentes de trânsito ocorridos na BR-282/SC, travessia urbana de Lages/SC, nos períodos antes, durante e após as obras de melhoria no local, onde houve a implantação de vias marginais, de interseções em desnível e duplicação. As informações sobre os acidentes foram obtidas junto à Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF), que disponibiliza dados para as rodovias federais pavimentadas do país. Por meio de análises estatísticas, os resultados mostraram que quase todos os tipos de acidentes registrados tiveram significativa redução após a inauguração das melhorias no trecho. Notou-se também um pequeno aumento no número de acidentes durante as obras causados por não guardar distância de segurança.
