Because philosophy always is, with Aristotle, a knowledge of principles Dante is searching for the “principium directivum” of Politics. These are the pax universalis and the bonum commune of whole mankind, i.e. the realization of the intellectus possibilis. But the allusion to Averroes’ doctrine of the unity of intellect (I, iii) is not really one of the main sources of Dante’s political thinking. The main sources are Aristotle and the Liber de causis. In favour of the dialectic of unity and plurality, the latter being one of the presuppositions and conditions of politics, Dante refers to the Liber de causis taking over its form of argumentation but not the metaphysical background. To demonstrate how there can be unity in plurality, is the task of political philosophy.
