From Nardi's assessment onwards "political averroism" became a polemical historiographical category, which led eventually to a scholar dispute on the existence or non existence of such a philosophical stream in the Mediaeval Thought. In fact, several passages of the Defensor pacis stress the distinction between Revelation and Reason, a distinction that clearly favours a rationalist attitude. Marsilian rationalism is however fluctuant. For instance, when Marsilius explains the birth of the civitas, this institution is attributed to the original sin, instead of being deduced from the concept of nature. Such a theoretical profit of the History of Salvation seems to deny (or at least to weaken) Marsilius' rationalism. This paper seeks to answer three questions: a) if Marsilius puts limits to Revelation in the Defensor pacis; b) which is the range of these limits; and c) if these limits to Revelation may be considered an averroist influence in Marsilius' Thought. Bruno Nardi fue el primero en referirse al pensamiento de Marsilio de Padua como “averroísmo político”. Sin embargo, dado que el Medioevo cristiano no tuvo acceso a la filosofía política de Averroes, Nardi no podía hablar de un averroísmo político en el pensamiento de Marsilio respecto a sus ideas políticas. Se refería, en cambio, a sus concepciones filosofías y, especialmente, a sus actitudes metodológicas hacia al relación Fe-Razón en el Defensor Pacis. Este planteo de Nardi del “averroísmo político” se convirtió en una categoría historiográfica polemica, y ha llevado eventualmente a una disputa entre estudiosos respecto a la existencia o no de esta corriente filosófica en el pensamiento medieval. De hecho, varios pasajes del Defensor pacis subrayan la distinción entre la Revelación y la Razón, una distinción que claramente favorece una actitud racionalista. Sin embargo, el racionalismo de Marsilio es fluctuante. Por ejemplo, cuando Marsilio explica el nacimiento de la civitas atribuye su institución al pecado en vez de deducirse del concepto de naturaleza. Este uso teórico de la Historia de la Salvación parecería negar (o al menos debilitar) el racionalismo marsiliano.
