To put it shortly, a significant part of the arts produced during the 20th Century can be understood as an encounter between tradition and modernity, and it would be important to take it into consideration when studying modern music. At its limit, the paper proposes seeing some artists as neither traditionalists opposed to avant-garde nor avant-gardists opposed to tradition, but as people who look for traditions to give “weight” to their modern art. What varies most, in this perspective, is where this weight is to be found. Aiming at this, first we discuss this more general perspective on modern art, then some theoretical points are made and discussed in order to sustain some perspectives of research and, finally, the main problem is tackled. Este texto parte de ideas dispersas para aclarar un punto que no fue tratado sino lateralmente en otras obras de su autor, es decir, el argumento según el cual una parte considerable del arte producido durante el siglo XX puede ser entendido como un encuentro entre la tradición y la modernidad. Proponemos que sería importante tener esto en cuenta a la hora de estudiar la música moderna. En última instancia, se propone no ver a algunos artistas ni como tradicionalistas opuestos a la vanguardia, ni como vanguardistas opuestos a la tradición, sino como creadores modernos que buscan respaldo en tradiciones que sirvan de peso para su arte. A tal efecto, esta postura más amplia es discutida en primer lugar. A continuación, trabajamos puntos teóricos con el fin de apoyar algunas perspectivas de investigación y, por último, el problema principal es abordado frontalmente. O presente texto parte de argumentos dispersos para explicitar um ponto que foi tratado lateralmente em outras empreitadas de seu autor, a saber, aquele segundo o qual parcela considerável da arte produzida ao longo do século XX pode ser entendida como um encontro entre tradição e modernidade e que seria importante levar isso em consideração ao estudar a música moderna. No limite, propõe-se enxergar alguns artistas como não sendo nem tradicionalistas opostos à vanguarda, nem vanguardistas opostos à tradição, mas sim criando a partir de uma modernidade que busca lastro em tradições, variando onde esse lastro é encontrado.
