Sayavedra is a character strongly linked to Guzmán’s desire and his identity sought, lost or self-denied, in a way that allows us to read “the tragicity of mutual discovery of an improper and reciprocal desire among men and, at the same time, the urgency of its necessary execration “(Vila, 2016: 141). Finally, when Sayavedra drowns in the sea, all unrestrained desire drowns with him and Guzmán is already purely rational, linguistically manly and explicit, without shadow or double. El caso del encuentro y separación de Guzmán y Sayavedra nuclea todo el Libro II de la Segunda parte de la novela alemaniana para cumplir con la eliminación del Nemo o la parte oscura del sujeto masculino europeo, occidental y cristiano (Forcione, 1985- 86: 564-590). Sayavedra es un personaje fuertemente ligado al deseo de Guzmán y a su identidad buscada, perdida o autonegada, de modo tal que nos permite leer “la tragicidad del descubrimiento mutuo de un deseo impropio y recíproco entre varones y, al mismo tiempo, la urgencia de su necesaria execración” (Vila, 2016: 141).
