The first part is related to the perception of the students about their CMI, the second part has an exercise that requires to put into practice those skills and its result is a text production, and the third part is the reflection of the students on its performance in the exercise. The texts produced were part of the research data. In addition, semi-structured interviews were done to deepen in the process of information handling. Findings shows that participants have a low CMI level, so some guidelines to strengthen the promotion of that competency are provided and can be considered in other contexts. Esta investigación identificó las competencias en manejo de información (CMI) de un grupo de estudiantes universitarios con miras a mejorar los programas de formación. Como referente teórico y de análisis se tomó el estándar propuesto por Association of College and Research Libraries. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó un cuestionario constituido por tres partes, la primera da cuenta de la percepción de los estudiantes sobre sus CMI, la segunda plantea un ejercicio que requiere poner en práctica estas competencias y tiene como resultado la producción de un texto y la tercera es la reflexión de los estudiantes sobre su desempeño en el ejercicio. Los textos fueron parte de los datos de investigación. Adicionalmente se realizaron entrevistas semi-estructuradas para profundizar en el proceso de manejo de información.
