It was a process, in a way, common to the creation of the state of education systems in countries around the world. The school library of Normal Schools had one goal: teacher education and training readers. Driven by Modern Education, the practices developed in school libraries in these schools served as a point of observation of good reading practices. Another way we can learn when we look at the constitution of the first collections of these schools is the presence of foreign books, many of them published in Europe and the United States. A significant portion of foreign books brought elements of the functioning of school systems in these regions and served as models for the educational reforms of the late nineteenth century in Brazil. These books were also the references for the chair of the Pedagogy of the Normal Schools, thus contributing to the process of construction of the teacher training school in Brazil from the international circulation of pedagogical knowledge. As the end of the nineteenth century in Brazil is an intense moment of circulation of European immigrants from highly educated countries, the demand for teacher training and the creation of public schools increases. Although in practice there has been more the creation of ethnic schools than of public schools to serve the foreign population, we see that the presence of foreign books in the libraries of the Normal Schools in Brazil is influenced by, for example, Protestant schools and foreign teachers who worked in these schools. By taking as an object the librarians of the Normal Schools we can see how this process boosted the spread of school libraries and the primary school reading practices, at a time prior to the professionalization of librarians in Brazil, and, at the same time facing illiteracy. Finally, analyzing the creation, installation and diffusion of school libraries of the Normal School allows us to think about the ways in which the pedagogical culture - as proposed by Marta Carvalho - is organized in the training space - under the influence of international models - at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century. http://eventosacademicos.filo.uba.ar/index.php/ische/39ische/paper/view/647 en Conferencia Internacional Permanente sobre Historia de la Educación Los autores que envíen algún trabajo a la conferencia están de acuerdo con los siguientes términos:
