The field of social studies on childhood has clearly developed and broaden in the last decades, through a reconceptualization of childhood as a sociocultural construction, with an emphasis on children’s active participation in social life, especially among scholars from the core countries who have spread the concept of “childhood agency” and “children’s cultures”. In this paper I analyze the assumptions and risks implied in the ways such categories are being used, drawing from my research with Mapuche indigenous children in the province of Neuquén, carried out since 2001. By contrasting this two powerfull concepts for marginalizaed theoretical and indigenous perspectives, I will argue for an approach that contextualices children’s agency and children’s cultural production in sociohistorical and cultural terms, within intergenerational and interethnic power relations, and those of class and gender. |

El campo de estudios sociales sobre la niñez viene avanzando y expandiéndose notablemente en las últimas décadas, a partir de reconceptualizar a la niñez como una construcción sociocultural, y a los niños y niñas, como sujetos activos en la vida social. En este proceso, se han difundido ampliamente las nociones de “agencia social de los niños y niñas” y de “culturas infantiles”, especialmente en la producción académica proveniente de países centrales. En el presente artículo, me propongo analizar los fundamentos y riesgos implicados en cómo se vienen usando estas categorías, a partir de los resultados de mis investigaciones con niños y niñas mapuche en la provincia del Neuquén, iniciadas en el año 2001. Al contrastar estos dos poderosos conceptos desde perspectivas teóricas e indígenas marginalizadas, argumentaré en favor de un abordaje que contextualice sociohistórica y culturalmente la agencia y la producción cultural infantil, en el marco de las relaciones de poder intergeneracionales, interétnicas, de clase y de género. O campo dos estudos sociais sobre as crianças vem nas últimas décadas avançando e expandindo-se notavelmente a partir da reconceituação da infância como uma construção sociocultural e considerando os meninos e meninas (crianças) como sujeitos ativos na vida social. Nesse processo, as noções de “agência social das crianças” e de “culturas infantis” têm sido amplamente difundidas, especialmente entre académicos dos países centrais. No presente artigo a minha proposta é a de analisar os fundamentos e riscos relativos à forma em como vem sendo usadas estas categorias a partir dos resultados das minhas pesquisas com meninos e meninas mapuche na província de Neuquén, Argentina, iniciadas em 2001.
