In this discussion there is an underlying tensión between collective welfare and individual rights, between profesional and legal aspects, between the political and ther historical. Beyond legal problems, the use we make of an interview is guided by what criteria? How do gender, race, and sociocultural aspects impinge in the construction of an interview? On the other hand, to whom does an interview belong? Should we develop profesional ethics committees to determine a correct usage of interviews?  El caso del archivo oral del Ejército Republicano Irlandés, en el Boston College, desató una importante discusión en torno a los usos de la historia oral. Evidentemente el problema para el historiador oral es múltiple y abarca desde cuestiones éticas hasta profesionales y legales. En toda esta discusión (y reflexión) existe una tensión subyacente entre el bien colectivo (social) y el derecho individual, entre lo profesional y lo legal, entre lo político y lo histórico. Más allá de los problemas legales, el uso que hacemos de la entrevista se guía por ¿qué criterios? ¿Cómo inciden cuestiones socioculturales de género, raza y clase en la construcción de los testimonios?
