This shows us that the poem was not considered by the artistic elites as a mere imitation of the Homeric hypotext. In this paper we propose to read the poem from a perspective that takes into account the reference to the hypotext as a conscious strategy of literary self-legitimation.  El Scutum pseudohesiódico no ha recibido por parte de la filología clásica una atención mayor al hecho de ser considerado como una mera y pobre imitación de la ékphrasis del escudo de Aquiles. Sin embargo, estas consideraciones no explican el alto nivel de popularidad que obtuvo el poema en las esferas artísticas de la época en la que habría sido compuesto: el Scutum no fue recibido como una mala imitación del hipotexto homérico.
