At the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata southern border, target of the colonization plan of the eastern Patagonian coast in late 18th century, three coastal forts were settled. This paper broadens the questions about one of them, Fuerte San José (Valdés Peninsula, Chubut Province, Argentina). Beyond the defensive plan seeking to reaffirm the Spanish presence in the region, we highlight the presence of the fort as shelter in a natural port and also as support for the exploitation of marine resources and salt, both available in the area Based in historical documents found in several archives, we have studied the first twelve years of operation in the Fort. As a result, the relationship between colonial planning coming from administrative centers and everyday development, attending to the actual incidence of foreign presence, interethnic relations, productive enterprises and colonial trade is been discussed. |

En la frontera sur del Virreinato del Río de la Plata, objeto del plan de colonización de la costa oriental patagónica de fines del siglo XVIII, se instalaron tres fuertes costeros. Este trabajo amplía las preguntas sobre uno de ellos, el Fuerte San José durante 1779-1810 (Chubut, Argentina). Más allá del carácter defensivo del plan español para reafirmar la presencia en la región, atendemos a la función del fuerte como resguardo en un puerto natural y de apoyo para la explotación de recursos marinos y de sal, disponibles en el área. Se estudió la documentación histórica de diversos archivos de los primeros doce años de funcionamiento del Fuerte. Como resultado se ha logrado discutir la relación entre la planificación colonial desde los centros administrativos y el desarrollo cotidiano, atendiendo a la incidencia efectiva de la presencia extranjera, las relaciones interétnicas, los emprendimientos productivos y el comercio colonial. Na fronteira sul do Vice-Reino do Rio da Prata, objeto do plano de colonização da costa oriental da Patagônia no final do século XVIII, foram estabelecidos três fortes costeiros. Este artigo aprofunda as questões em torno de um deles, o Forte San José, construído entre 1779 e 1810 (Chubut, Argentina). Além do caráter defensivo do plano espanhol de reafirmar sua presença na região, abordamos a função do forte como refúgio em um porto natural e como suporte para a exploração dos recursos marinhos e salinos disponíveis na área. Foi estudada a documentação histórica de vários arquivos que abrangem os primeiros doze anos de operação do forte.
