Analysis of legislative debates, con-ceptualized as mixed sources, suggests the hypothesis according to which the school isnecessary for citizenship and at the same time impossible. The contradiction betweenthe state’s debt in guaranteeing youth citizenship and the inherently political nature of young people illustrates the difficulties in understanding this institution as a democraticspace co-produced by both adults and young people. La sanción de leyes ampliatorias de los derechos políticos para los adolescentes en Argentina durante 2012, constituyó una ocasión para que confrontaran públicamente las concepciones del mundo adulto relativas al protagonismo político de esta franja de edad. Con un enfoque histórico-etnográfico, se analiza el lugar asignado a la escuela y al derecho a la educación, constituidos en argumentos centrales a la hora de dirimir el acceso al voto y se expone el heterogéneo abanico de expectativas depositadas en la institución. El análisis de los debates legislativos, conceptualizados como fuentes mixtas, permite exponer la hipótesis según la cual la escuela es necesaria para la ciudadanía y al mismo tiempo imposible. La contradicción entre las deudas estatales para garantizar la ciudadanía juvenil y la naturaleza inherentemente política de los jóvenes, ilustra las dificultades para pensar dicha institución como un espacio democrático coproducido por adultos y jóvenes. A promulgação de leis mais abrangentes de direitos políticos para adolescentes naArgentina durante o percurso de 2012 foi uma ocasião para se enfrentarem publica-mente as concepções do mundo adulto em relação ao protagonismo político dessa faixaetária. Com uma abordagem histórico-etnográfica, analisa-se a dimensão atribuídaà escola e o direito à educação, constituindo-se em argumentos centrais ao decidir oacesso à votação; também e expõem-se a heterogeneidade das expectativas depositadasna instituição. A análise dos debates legislativos, conceituados como fontes mistas,permite expor a hipótese segundo a qual a escola é necessária para a cidadania e, aomesmo tempo, impossível.
