Sumario:The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role played by ARPEL in the process of regional integration of the oil sector in Latin America. Based on the concept of "epistemic communities", we will examine the history of ARPEL from 1965 to 2000. Initially ARPEL - Latin American Reciprocal State Oil Assistance - brought together state oil companies when it was founded in 1965, then, in the 1990s, it completed its transformation and incorporated private companies among its members and changed its name - in 1993: Latin American Reciprocal Business Oil Assistance, and in 1998: Regional Association of Oil and Natural Gas Companies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
