description Towards the end of 2015 I began ethnographic fieldwork at the secondary school of a social and educational closed-regime center, an institution located in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires housing young people detained due to criminal law offenses or alleged offenses. The article describes the young people’s social practices and representations based on their experience at school. Daily routine at the center’s school cannot be analyzed without taking into account the wider social context in which everyday practices fit into and attain deep meaning. I discuss recent legal shifts and the different public policies developed to encompass their implementation, and examine the extent to which such policies represent major improvements in promoting the right to education in prison settings.

A fines del año 2015 comencé a realizar un trabajo de campo etnográfico en la escuela secundaria de un centro socioeducativo de régimen cerrado (CRC), institución ubicada en la ciudad de Buenos Aires y en la cual se encuentran detenidos jóvenes considerados por la justicia “infractores o presuntos infractores” de la ley penal. El propósito de este artículo es dar cuenta de las representaciones y las prácticas que los jóvenes producen en su tránsito por la escuela. Entiendo que la cotidianeidad de la escuela del centro no puede ser contemplada sin estimar el contexto social más amplio, ya que en él se inscriben y adquieren su profunda significación las prácticas que registré diariamente. En este sentido, me referiré a las recientes políticas educativas y sociales, y a las modificaciones legales que, en principio, constituyeron avances de importancia en la promoción del acceso al derecho a la educación en ámbitos carcelarios. No final do ano 2015 comecei a realizar um trabalho de campo etnográfico na escola secundária de um centro socioeducativo de regime fechado, uma instituição localizada na Cidade Autônoma de Buenos Aires e na qual se encontram presos jovens considerados pela justiça infratores ou presumidos infratores da lei penal. O propósito deste artigo é o de informar sobre as representações e as práticas sociais que os jovens desenvolvem a respeito de sua passagem pela escola. Em minha opinião, a cotidianidade da escola do centro não pode ser refletida sem considerar o contexto social mais amplo, já que nele se enquadram e adquirem sua profunda significação as práticas que registrei diariamente. Vou me referir às recentes mudanças legais e às diferentes políticas públicas criadas para acompanhar sua implementação.
