Despite being a famous poem, the textual history and meaning of “Triumphal March” still convey important conundrums. It is commonly known that the poem was written in 1895 as homage to Argentina in its National Day. A decade later, the poem was included in the work Songs of Life and Hope/Cantos de vida y esperanza, and Rubén Darío referred to it as “a triumph of decoration and music”. The publishing and critic traditions upon “Triumphal March” have mainly nurtured from anecdotes in the poet’s friend circle, and from their own legends. In 1995, Pedro L. Barcia published a crucial critical analysis accompanied by an edition of the poem manuscript –nowadays preserved by the Argentine Society of Writers– in which the author clarified many of the circumstances regarding its composition, background, procedure, and scope. But still, many other questions remained unsolved. The aim of this paper is to reopen these questions regarding the poem and its contextualization, adding new data and introducing a metaphoric, cultural and metaliterary reading of the poem, parallel to the usual patriotic interpretation. |

Pese a ser un poema muy famoso, la historia textual y el sentido mismo de “Marcha triunfal” siguen presentando importantes incógnitas. Sabemos que fue escrito en 1895 como homenaje a la Argentina en el día de su fiesta nacional, que apareció incluido una década después en Cantos de vida y esperanza, y que Rubén Darío se refirió a él únicamente como “un triunfo de decoración y de música”. La tradición crítica y editorial sobre el poema se ha nutrido básicamente de las anécdotas contadas por los amigos del poeta, y no ha dejado de añadir sus propias leyendas. En 1995 Pedro L. Barcia publicó una imprescindible edición crítica del manuscrito de “Marcha triunfal” que se conserva en la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores, en la que aclaró muchas de sus circunstancias de composición, antecedentes, procedimientos y trasmisión. Pero aún quedan preguntas abiertas. El presente trabajo vuelve a interrogar y a contextualizar el poema, aporta datos nuevos y propone una lectura metafórica, cultural y metaliteraria, complementaria de la interpretación patriótica habitual. Apesar de ser um poema muito famoso, a história textual e o mesmo sentido de “Marcha triunfal” apresenta ainda muitas incógnitas. Sabemos que ele foi escrito em 1895 como um tributo a Argentina no dia da sua festa nacional, que apareceu publicado uma década mais tarde em Cantos de vida y esperanza, e Rubén Darío se referia a ele apenas como “um triunfo de decoração e música”. A tradição crítica e editorial do poema baseia-se basicamente nas histórias contadas por amigos do poeta, e tem continuado a adicionar suas próprias lendas. Em 1995, Pedro L. Barcia publicou uma edição crítica indispensável do manuscrito de “Marcha triunfal” preservada na Sociedade Argentina de Escritores, que esclareceu muitas das circunstâncias dos procedimentos de composição, da sua história e da sua transmissão. Mas ainda existem questões em aberto.
