Durante el periodo Clásico, sobre todo en el Tardío, hubo una dinastía gobernante, en las Tierras Bajas mayas, que se impuso a las demás. Los Kaanajawo’ob estaban presentes en un amplio territorio imponiéndose en centros de su área regional y suprarregional formando una red de alianzas favorables que les permitió, durante un periodo concreto, controlar el ascenso de nuevos gobernantes en diferentes centros geoestratégicos.
