This article discusses some paradigmatic changes in the ways of understanding the relationship between the work and the public, and from that point the discourse of participation since the sixties. To do so, theoretically, some studies that have marked those years and others who have had special relevance in the present moment will be considered, and from the perspective of the current stage several works will be discussed from the point of view of the relation to the spectator and the way to involve him in the stage event. Participation is presented not only as the possibility of an action but as a performative element of a representation holding a fiction collectively.  La participación no solo implica una acción, también una ficción que la envuelve y le da sentido. Este artículo discute algunos cambios paradigmáticos en las formas de entender la relación entre la obra y el público, y a partir de ahí el discurso de la participación desde los años sesenta. Para ello, a nivel teórico, se selecciona una serie de estudios que han marcaron aquella época y otros que han tenido especial relevancia en el momento actual y, a nivel escénico, se analiza desde el punto de vista del lugar del espectador diversas obras actuales donde de una manera explícita se interpela al espectador para involucrarlo en el hecho escénico.
