It is argued that the boom should be understood within the context of the international transition to sound film, and nationalist fervor in Mexico. Similarly, it is proposed that the boom resulted from the ability of the National Film Production Company to exploit those contexts, as well as the enthusiasm generated by its foundational film, Santa (Moreno, 1932). Studies on the Mexican film industry have emphasized the role of aesthetic and social elements in understanding the development of Mexican ci-nema; however, this study seeks to contribute to this historiography by incorporating microeconomic elements as well as tools from literature regarding industry formation.
