It is inserted in an international context where Mexico is incorporated into the world market as a primary-exporting economy in accordance with the requirements of the United States and England. Yucatán was the main producer of hene­quen global level, mainly for the North American market. Due to the growing international demand for hene­quen, a railway connecting the haciendas with the port of exportation was necessary, for this reason the local élite, owners of the henequen haciendas, built the railroads with the support of foreign capital. Este artículo estudia la política económica que se implementó en la construcción del ferrocarril yucateco durante el Porfiriato (1876-1910), a partir del análisis de los discursos de la élite económica y política inmersa en el proceso de construcción y administración de las vías férreas en Yucatán. Se inserta en un contexto internacional donde México se incorpora al mercado mundial como una economía primario-exportadora de acuerdo con los requerimientos de Estados Unidos e Inglaterra. En lo que respecta a Yucatán, fue el principal productor de henequén a nivel global, principalmente para el mercado norteamericano.
