During the Lencinist administration there were attempts to promote the search for oil. Although there were a large number of requests for searches, practically no company moved on to the next stage of the value chain. During the 1930s, on the other hand, the state company applied state-of-the-art knowledge to search for oil in the Cuyo basins. Indeed, the work analyzes the different exploratory methods that YPF was using during the stage under study. Este trabajo analiza la etapa exploradora y los avances técnicos aplicados en la búsqueda de petróleo en Mendoza entre 1918 y 1943. Se destacan dos momentos históricos comprendidos entre las gobernaciones lencinistas y las conservadoras. Los resultados fueron muy diferentes debido a la acción del Estado por un lado y la gestión de Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales por otro. Durante la gestión lencinista hubo intentos por promover la búsqueda de petróleo. Si bien hubo una gran cantidad de solicitudes de cateos, prácticamente ninguna empresa pasó a la siguiente etapa de cadena de valor. Durante la década de 1930, en cambio, la com­pañía estatal aplicó conocimientos de última generación para la búsqueda de petróleo en las cuencas cuyanas.
