It is a mountainous area, with an arid and semi-arid climate, and transhumant livestock is the main production. This historical activity dates back to the trans-Andean exchanges prior to the imposition of border limits between Chile and Argentina. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was exposed to political, economic and ecological factors that conditioned its survival and placed the crianceros in a place of “mistrust” and “stigmatisation”; however, it continues to resist the advance of capitalist modernity. It is carried out on public lands by family producers with peasant characteristics and the herds are made up of goats and, to a lesser extent, sheep and cattle. Its importance is reflected in data from the 2018 National Agricultural Census which indicates that 53% of farms have goats and 52% have undefined boundaries. The paper, which we started in 2016 with Mónica Bendini, describes the demographic dynamics and characterises the mode of production and work organisation of goatbreeding families. It uses quantitative data, documentary sources, academic literature and in-depth interviews with crianceros/as and key informants between 2019 and 2021.
