En los comienzos de su larga trayectoria hay dos episodios fundamentales: en 1921 es invitado a participar en un concurso nacional sobre las instituciones del reino de Asturias. Sánchez Albornoz pasará un año y medio recorriendo los archivos locales del norte de España primero y de otras regiones después. Transcribiendo documentos y tomando notas reúne miles de fichas que van a constituir su archivo personal. El segundo hecho crucial es su estadía en Viena entre 1927 y 1928, que planifica para mejorar su alemán y para estar en contacto con Dopsch, a quien admira.La actividad política de Claudio Sánchez Albornoz se inicia con la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, que lo impulsa a presentar resistencia.
