Opposing the plethora of scholars who accept, uncritically, the narrative of Josephus, Pierre Vidal-Naquet developed a new interpretation which put into question the existence of such a mass suicide, criticizing, simultaneously, the biased tendency of national archaeologies in general and Israel in particular.
