I28-R145-2637_oai2025-02-11 Acuña, Carlos Cetrángolo, Oscar Cáceres, Verónica Goldschmit, Ariela 2023-02-15 This work analyzes the political economy of water and sanitation policies in Argentina. From a historical point of view, it sets the focus in the institutional, policy and regulatory incentives faced by socio-political actors and economic agents involved in the decision-making that affects the provision of the water service. Within this framework it highlights that these policies were affected by contextual variables (that set the question of water and sanitation in the broader context of the economy and the political-institutional characteristics of Argentina) and by those specific to the government and coordination of the policy sector. The analysis shows that the problems of the sectorial policies and their causes, are historically deeply rooted. Finally, the study concludes stressing the need to prioritize the strengthening of the institutions that deal with the design and implementation of water and sanitation. And this as a first step, an unavoidable pre-condition, to sustain the long process that demands the solution of the problems that permeate the provision of water and sanitation in Argentina.
