| Sumario: | One of the few high-tech industrial sectors where Argentina has generated its own innovation capabilities is the satellite industry. This is the result of a process initiated more than two decades ago. During that time the country was able to design and put into orbit different satellites, both in observation and telecommunications missions. This paper explores the “space economy” in Argentina, aiming to understand its evolution, its current status and future prospects. The analysis aims to provide a broad perspective, focusing not only on the actors and technological achievements, but also on the linkages and externalities that can emerge from this activity. The objective is to identify the weaknesses, strengths and potential of the industry in the local, regional and global context, in a scenario that in a sense constitutes a breaking point in the policy making areas which have direct and indirect impacts on the sector. From the analysis we derive both a research agenda and some recommendations to frame the strategic decisions to be adopted from now on in this area. |
