This is the result of a process initiated more than two decades ago. During that time the country was able to design and put into orbit different satellites, both in observation and telecommunications missions. This paper explores the “space economy” in Argentina, aiming to understand its evolution, its current status and future prospects. The analysis aims to provide a broad perspective, focusing not only on the actors and technological achievements, but also on the linkages and externalities that can emerge from this activity. The objective is to identify the weaknesses, strengths and potential of the industry in the local, regional and global context, in a scenario that in a sense constitutes a breaking point in the policy making areas which have direct and indirect impacts on the sector. From the analysis we derive both a research agenda and some recommendations to frame the strategic decisions to be adopted from now on in this area. Uno de los pocos sectores industriales de alta tecnología en donde la Argentina ha generado capacidades de innovación propias es el satelital. Esto es resultado de un proceso de más de dos décadas a lo largo de las cuáles el país fue capaz de diseñar y poner en órbita diferentes satélites tanto de observación como de telecomunicaciones. El presente trabajo realiza una exploración sobre la “economía del espacio” en Argentina, apuntando a entender su evolución, presente y perspectivas. El análisis intenta aportar una mirada amplia, poniendo foco no sólo en los actores y los desarrollos tecnológicos alcanzados, sino también en los encadenamientos y externalidades que puede generar la actividad. El objetivo es identificar las debilidades, fortalezas y potencialidades de la industria en el contexto local, regional y global, en un escenario que en cierto sentido constituye un punto de inflexión en la toma de decisiones de política pública con impacto directo e indirecto sobre la actividad.
