A large group of Argentine companies have joined this new techno-productive paradigm with the aim of developing and commercializing goods and services associated with precision agriculture. The objective of this working paper is to analyze the characteristics, performance and future perspectives of this group of companies. The main source of information for this purpose is the First National Survey of Precision Agriculture and Livestock, which included 77 companies. The results of the survey were complemented with multiple interviews and meetings with industry leaders and experts. In both cases, the issues addressed included the structural characteristics of these firms, their achievements, routines and personnel employed for innovation activities as well as the obstacles they perceive for further growth. Based on this analysis, the document discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by this emerging sector.

La llamada “agricultura de precisión” resulta de la convergencia de dos procesos paralelos: i) el surgimiento de nuevos desarrollos tecnológicos con diversas aplicaciones en la agricultura y la ganadería, varios de ellos derivados de innovaciones en el campo de las TIC, y ligados a la ciencia de datos, la inteligencia artificial y la electrónica; ii) las transformaciones ocurridas en la organización de la producción de los bienes de base biológica, en particular en el caso de la agricultura extensiva. Un nutrido grupo de empresas argentinas se han montado sobre este nuevo paradigma tecno-productivo con el objetivo de desarrollar y comercializar bienes y servicios asociados a la agricultura de precisión. El objetivo del presente documento de trabajo es analizar las características, desempeño y perspectivas futuras de este grupo de empresas. La fuente principal de información a tales efectos es la Primera Encuesta Nacional a Empresas de Agricultura y Ganadería de Precisión, la cual abarcó a 77 empresas. Los resultados de la encuesta fueron complementados con múltiples entrevistas y reuniones con referentes y expertos del sector. En ambos casos se abordaron temas ligados a las características estructurales de las firmas, sus logros, rutinas y personal empleado para las actividades de innovación, así como también los obstáculos que identifican como limitantes para su crecimiento.
