Through a qualitative metho­dology and a corpus of different types of sources (business, journalistic, state and testimonial), it seeks to explain the reasons that led to the opening of the Santa Fe plants in 1969, the investments made there during the following years and the gradual closure of the enterprise from 1977 onwards, culminating in 1980 with a partial reconversion. In addition to the factors that led to fiat's establishment in Sauce Viejo, the text analyses the impact of the Argentine military government's economic measures on the direction taken by the company, arguing that these had direct consequences for the enterprise. Este trabajo examina las decisiones tomadas por la empresa fiat en lo concerniente a las plantas de tractores, motores y camiones que existieron en la localidad de Sauce Viejo, provincia de Santa Fe, entre 1969 y 1980. Utilizando una metodología cualitativa para atender a un corpus de fuentes de diverso tipo (em­presariales, periodísticas, oficiales y testimoniales), el artículo explica las razones que propiciaron tanto la aper­tura de las plantas santafesinas en 1969 y las inversiones allí desarrolladas durante los años siguientes, como el cierre gradual del emprendimiento a partir de 1977, culminado en 1980 con una parcial reconversión.
