Sumario:The balance-of-payments crisis of 1948 represented the first episode of a long series, throughout the 20th century, where external restriction setobjective limits on the growth capacity of the Argentine economy,led by the development of industry and the expansion of its domestic market.This article examines the Peronism’s particular approach of this early crisis of the virtuous scheme applied between 1946 and 1948. It analysesthe changing diagnoses made by the economic team, the economic policy instruments that were taken into account and those that were actuallyused, the limits imposed by the political sustainability of possible alternatives and the restrictions imposed on them by both the development ofinternational markets and the future of domestic agricultural production.
