It analysesthe changing diagnoses made by the economic team, the economic policy instruments that were taken into account and those that were actuallyused, the limits imposed by the political sustainability of possible alternatives and the restrictions imposed on them by both the development ofinternational markets and the future of domestic agricultural production. La crisis de la balanza de pagos de 1948 representó el primer episodio de una larga serie, a lo largo del siglo XX, donde la restricción externaestableció límites objetivos a la capacidad de crecimiento de la economía argentina presidida por el desarrollo de la industria y la ampliación desu mercado interno.A lo largo de este artículo se estudia el particular abordaje que tuvo el peronismo de esta temprana crisis del esquema virtuoso aplicado entre1946 y 1948.
