Sumario:This paper reviews the available evidence on the relationship between technological change and employment at the international level, and carries out different quantitative and qualitative exercises in order to evaluate the impacts of the automation of tasks on employment in Uruguay. The evidence so far does not allow us to conclude anything accurately regarding the preeminence of the scale or substitution effects. However, it seems clear that there has been a movement in the type of required skills associated with the technological change. In particular, there is not only a shift from physical and manual to cognitive skills, accompanied by a growing requirement for higher educational levels, but also, at least in certain cases, a greater demand for socio-emotional skills.
