A categorization developed by the economist Robert Rowthorn is used to characterize each of these three paths based on the evolution of other key variables, such as the aggregate economic activity, productivity and the development of new dynamic economic sectors. The analysis suggests that the United States and the United Kingdom represent cases of what literature has called positive deindustrialization, in the US as a result of the very maturity of the economic development process and in the UK on the score of an economic re-specialization towards high-productivity tradable services. Argentina's path, on the other hand, illustrates an archetypal example of negative deindustrialization, where the downfall of manufacturing went along with a comprehensive worsening of key economic and social variables.
