The Argentine economy in 2020: between the Covid-19 crisis and the structural restrictions of peripheral development

In 2020, the Argentine economy registered a new trough in the trend of stagnation and decline of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which would be as pronounced as the historical crisis of 2001-2002. However, this scenario could not only attribute to the effects of the pandemic on the world economy....

description In 2020, the Argentine economy registered a new trough in the trend of stagnation and decline of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which would be as pronounced as the historical crisis of 2001-2002. However, this scenario could not only attribute to the effects of the pandemic on the world economy. Undoubtedly, Covid-19 will go down in history as the black swan that shook the foundations of society and the international economic system, heading into the third decade of the 2000s. The consequences (economic, political, social, international security, among others) that this pandemic will leave are still far from being appreciated in their real magnitude. All economies suffered to contain the collective spread of the virus - to a greater or lesser degree; even so, Argentina will be among the most affected countries in the world. By the Fernández administration's decision, in 2020, the country faced one of the longest and most restrictive isolations in the region, even though its economy had been experiencing a crisis that dates back almost a decade. This crisis has been characterized by the process of long economic stagnation, with circumstantial imbalances and high inflation that is well above the world average. The permanence of important structural restrictions is evident, and reminds those -forty years ago, Prebisch attributed to the dynamics of peripheral capitalism.
