description The article analyzes the early years of expansion of the national educational system in the Puna of Jujuy (1880-1905). First, we situate the historiographical background on public education in Argentina. Then, we briefly describe the origins of the educational system in Jujuy and analyze a report on the province, written in 1881 by Domingo F. Sarmiento, whose diagnosis and assumptions regarding the notions of desert and ignorance influenced the establishment of schools in the high Andean territory. Finally, we address the complex beginnings of school expansion in the Puna within the broader process of incorporating the territory and its population into the Nation. We argue that the educational system, as a form of the State, reached the region as a fragmented assemblage of norms, agents, and materialities configured through local interactions, mediated by power relations and material conditions, thus revealing a situated and negotiated statehood rather than a fully imposed one.

Primero, situamos los antecedentes historiográficos sobre la educación pública argentina. Luego, describimos brevemente los orígenes del sistema educativo en Jujuy, y analizamos un informe de Domingo F. Sarmiento de 1881 sobre la provincia, cuyos diagnósticos y presupuestos en torno a los conceptos de desierto e ignorancia influyeron en la instalación de escuelas en el territorio altoandino. Finalmente, abordamos los intrincados comienzos de la expansión escolar en la Puna en el contexto de la incorporación del territorio y su población a la Nación. Planteamos que el sistema educativo, como forma del Estado, llegó a la región como un ensamblaje fragmentado de normas, agentes y materialidades cuya presencia se configuró en interacciones locales, mediadas por relaciones de poder y condiciones materiales, evidenciando una estatalidad situada y negociada más que impuesta de forma total. O artigo analisa os primeiros anos da expansão do sistema educacional nacional na Puna de Jujuy (1880-1905). Em primeiro lugar, situamos os antecedentes historiográficos sobre a educação pública na Argentina. Em seguida, descrevemos brevemente as origens do sistema educacional em Jujuy e analisamos um relatório sobre a província, escrito em 1881 por Domingo F. Sarmiento, cujo diagnóstico e pressupostos em torno dos conceitos de deserto e ignorância influenciou a instalação de escolas no território alto-andino. Por fim, abordamos os complexos começos da expansão escolar na Puna no contexto da incorporação do território e de sua população à Nação.
