description The debate on state formation in Chavín de Huántar was shaped by the category of the “theocratic state,” particularly by Luis Lumbreras and Henry Tantaleán proposals. This article subjects these interpretations to an epistemological and ontological critique, revealing their limited explanatory capacity and their  tendency to impose a structured narrative on the archaeological record without rigorous theoretical and methodological mediation. Based on this critical reassessment, the article proposes to understand the state as a contingent historical possibility, rooted in specific material conditions and articulated through a set of relational categories. The proposal is structured around three pillars: 1) a theoretical clarification of the state concept and its constitutive categories -exploitation, social classes, property, and ideology-; 2) the formulation of concrete scenarios and social relations in which these categories may have historically  materialized; and 3) the critical articulation between the observable archaeological record and the social practices that gave rise to it.

El debate sobre la estatalidad en Chavín de Huántar estuvo marcado por la categoría de “estado teocrático”, especialmente en las propuestas de Luis Lumbreras y Henry Tantaleán. Este artículo somete dichas interpretaciones a una crítica epistemológica y ontológica, al poner de manifiesto su limitadacapacidad explicativa y su tendencia a imponer una narrativa estructurada sobre el registro arqueológico sin una mediación teórico-metodológica rigurosa. A partir de esta revisión crítica se propone comprender el Estado como una posibilidad histórica contingente, enraizada en condiciones materiales específicas, y articulado a un conjunto de categorías relacionales. La propuesta se organiza en tres pilares: 1) la  Explicitación teórica del concepto de Estado y de sus categorías constitutivas -explotación, clases sociales, propiedad e ideología-; 2) la formulación de escenarios y relaciones sociales concretas en las que dichas  Categorías pudieron haberse materializado históricamente; y 3) la articulación crítica entre el registro  Arqueológico observable y las prácticas sociales que lo originaron.  O debate sobre a condição de Estado em Chavín de Huántar tem sido marcado pela categoria de “Estado teocrático”, especialmente nas propostas de Luis Lumbreras e Henry Tantaleán. Este artigo submete estas interpretações a uma crítica epistemológica e ontológica, revelando a sua limitada capacidade explicativa e sua tendência para impor uma narrativa estruturada sobre o registro arqueológico sem uma mediação teórico-metodológica rigorosa. A partir desta revisão crítica propõe-se entender o Estado como uma  possibilidade histórica contingente, enraizada em condições materiais específicas e articulada num conjunto de categorias relacionais.
