An environmentally sustainable university is one that seeks to minimize its negative environmental, social and economic impacts and is also committed to the sustainable development of society. To respond to this challenge universities have defined different approaches to incorporate sustainability into all their activities. A widely used approach is through the implementation of an Environmental Management System in its own organization. In this paper, the University of Malaga implemented an Environmental Management System, following the guidelines of the ISO 14001 standards. The main focus is on the university solid waste management system and how the awareness and training strengthened the participation of the university community and achieved success in waste management.
