The text proposes a historical review of the different meanings of the “San José” category, which is defined by the authors as an epoch’s aesthetic of the early Late Period. From the morphology and pattern analysis of 253 complete urns housed in museum collections a new classification of the San José vessels, which inte-grates former typological categories and formalizes new variants to account for a diversity not previously considered, is presented. This classification attempt constitutes an interesting tool to contribute to discus-sions about the origins, chronology, uses and regional variations of the San José aesthetic and the links to the Santa María aesthetic in the regional Late Period. Se exponen los avances en la elaboración de clasificaciones estilísticas de las alfarerías de comienzos del segundo milenio en el área de Yocavil (provincia de Catamarca, Argentina) y zonas vecinas. El texto propone un repaso histórico por los diferentes sentidos de la categoría “San José”, la cual es definida por las autoras como una estética de época correspondiente a los inicios del Período Tardío. A partir del análisis de la morfología y diseños de 253 tinajas (urnas) enteras de museos se presenta una nueva clasificación de las tinajas San José, que integra categorías tipológicas previas y formaliza nuevas variantes para dar cuenta de una diversidad no contemplada en esquemas anteriores.
