From this general perspective, it´s argued that some large projects undertaken by various planning agencies contemplated both the progress of industrialization as substitute industrial export where the reasons for “national defense” or autarky were relegated in pursuit of the resolution of the insufficiency of currency and the achievement of greater productive efficiency. Specifically, we analyzed the case of the installation of an aluminum plant in the late sixties. The creation of the company Aluar, which was finally in charge of the project, responded to a state initiative that considered especially that it was economically viable and competitive in international terms. Este trabajo pretende discutir las interpretaciones simplistas sobre la ineficiencia de la industrialización argentina durante el período considerado como de “sustitución de importaciones”. Desde esa perspectiva general, se plantea que algunos grandes proyectos encarados por diversos organismos de planificación contemplaron tanto el avance de la industrialización sustitutiva como a la exportación industrial donde las razones de “defensa nacional” o autarquía fueron relegadas en pos de la resolución de la insuficiencia de divisas y del logro de una mayor eficiencia productiva. Específicamente, se analiza el caso de la instalación de una planta de aluminio a fines de los años sesenta.
