These animals, included in literary descriptions and visual representations, act as exempla, emphasizing the virtues that the ideal monarch should practice or the path he should follow. To achieve these aims and to obtain a comprehensive vision, we will study engravings, emblem books, political treatises on monarchy, and pieces of ephemeral architecture. We thus intend to attain a better understanding of the allegorical properties of a number of animals that shaped the visual culture of the king’s ideal image, a perfect example of the symbolic culture during the Spanish Baroque. El artículo plantea el análisis de los animales simbólicos asociados al monarca Felipe IV, ejemplificando las virtudes del buen gobernante. A través de descripciones literarias o por medio de elementos visuales, la presencia de los animales, a modo de exempla, subraya las particularidades que debe mostrar el monarca ideal o trata de conducirlo hacia una vía virtuosa. Nuestra contribución ahonda en el uso de esos modelos mediante el análisis de grabados, obras de literatura emblemática, manuales de teoría político-regia o las construcciones decorativas de carácter efímero que nos permiten extraer una visión de conjunto.
