Public discourse around the night has been plagued by ambiguities, contradictions and double standards for several decades in Southern European cities: either described as a place of pleasure or dark threats and dangers; a place of economic and tourist growth or a place where ‘informality’, the ‘black market’ and underground activities take place. Alongside this, the emergence of migrant, often racialised, people exercising survival activities at night in these unequal economies of pleasure, has unleashed all the levers of contemporary demonisation against urban subalternity. With a particular focus on Madrid (Spain) and Rome (Italy), and through an exhaustive analysis of secondary sources, interviews with key actors, and participant observation, in this paper I explore the contradictions inherent to the geographies of pleasure in these territories. First, how public narratives of ‘blackness’ - underpinned by historical imaginaries of an alienated and racialised otherness - that appeal to a ‘white morality’ are used to make certain informal actors more clandestine (e.g. sex workers, street vendors) and drive them ‘into the shadows’ of urban space. Secondly, how the clandestinisation - followed by increased precariousness and psychological, physical and labour abuse - of these actors is operative to the neoliberal governance of South European geographies of pleasure (a public space cleansed of dark bodies) and to circuits of neoliberal accumulation. |

En las ciudades del sur de Europa, el discurso público en torno a la noche está plagado de ambigüedades, contradicciones y dobles morales desde hace varias décadas: lugar de placer o de amenazas y peligros oscuros; de generación de riqueza o lugar idóneo para la “informalidad”, el “mercado negro” y las actividades underground. Junto con ello, la aparición de personas migrantes, a menudo racializadas, ejerciendo actividades de supervivencia en la noche en estas desiguales economías del placer, ha desbocado todos los resortes de la demonización contemporánea contra la subalternidad urbana. Con especial atención a Madrid (España) y Roma (Italia), y a través de un análisis exhaustivo de fuentes secundarias, entrevistas con actores clave y observación participante, en este trabajo propongo explorar las contradicciones inherentes a las geografías del placer en estos territorios. Primero, cómo las narrativas públicas sobre la “oscuridad” –sostenidas por imaginarios históricos de una alteridad asalvajada y racializada– que apelan a una “moralidad blanca” son usadas para clandestinizar a ciertos actores informalizados (eg. trabajadoras sexuales, vendedores ambulantes) y llevarlos “a la sombra” del espacio urbano. Segundo, cómo la clandestinización –seguida del aumento de la precariedad y el abuso físico, psicológico laboral– de dichos actores resulta operativa para la gobernanza neoliberal de las geografías del placer sud-europeas (un espacio público limpio de cuerpos oscuros) y a los circuitos de acumulación neoliberal. Nas cidades do Sul da Europa, o discurso público em torno da noite tem sido, desde há várias décadas, marcado por ambiguidades, contradições e dois pesos e duas medidas: um lugar de prazer ou um lugar de ameaças e perigos sombrios; um lugar de geração de riqueza ou um lugar de “informalidade”, de “mercado negro” e de actividades clandestinas. Paralelamente, a emergência de migrantes, muitas vezes racializados, nestas economias desiguais de prazer, exercendo actividades de sobrevivência durante a noite, desencadeou toda a demonização contemporânea contra a subalternidade urbana. Com uma perspectiva particular em Madrid (Espanha) e Roma (Itália), e através de uma análise exaustiva de fontes secundárias, entrevistas com actores-chave e observação participante, proponho-me neste artigo explorar as contradições inerentes às geografias do prazer nestes territórios. Em primeiro lugar, como as narrativas públicas da “negritude” - sustentadas por imaginários históricos de uma alteridade alienada e racializada - que apelam a uma “moralidade branca” são usadas para clandestinar certos actores informalizados (por exemplo, trabalhadoras do sexo, vendedores ambulantes) e empurrá-los para “as sombras” do espaço urbano.
