Human subsistence was based mainly on consumption of Lama guanicoe for its meat, marrow, fat and bones for toolmaking. Other species with a lower energy return (Diplodon chilensis, Rhea pennata, Hippocamelus bisulcus, Lycalopex culpaeus, Lycalopex gymnocercus, Puma concolor, Leopardus sp., Conepatus chinga, Chaetophractus villosus, Lagidium viscacia and Caviinae indet.) supplemented humans’ subsistence. Exotic taxa Ovis orientalis aries and Bos primigenius taurus were secondary for their subsistence. Se presenta el estudio zooarqueológico y tafonómico del sitio Comallo U1, una cueva ubicada en la cuenca media del río Limay (Prov. de Río Negro, Argentina). Los materiales faunísticos proceden del Componente Precerámico (1440 ± 50 AP) y del Componente Cerámico (posterior a 1000 AP). Se determinó una baja incidencia de procesos postdeposicionales en ambos componentes. La subsistencia humana se basó, principalmente, en Lama guanicoe para el consumo de su carne, extracción de médula y de grasa ósea y para la confección de instrumentos. Otras especies de retorno energético menor (Diplodon chilensis, Rhea pennata, Hippocamelus bisulcus, Lycalopex culpaeus, Lycalopex gymnocercus, Puma concolor, Leopardus sp., Conepatus chinga, Chaetophractus villosus, Lagidium viscacia y Caviinae indet.) complementaron la subsistencia humana.
