To pay attention to youth is to pay close attention to the topology of the social landscape — to power and agency; public, national and domestic spaces and identities, and their articulation and disjuntures; memory, history, and sense of change; globalization and governance; gender and class. In this introduction I draw attention to how youth is constructed as a problematic category and how it acts as a “social shifter” engaging the social imagination, to how youth contributes to generational debates and constructions, and to how considerations of youth challenges our thinking about agency. Los jóvenes son, cada vez más, tema de estudio obligado en África. Se están involucrando en el espacio político en formas muy complejas. Atender a los jóvenes es ocuparse de la topología del paisaje social: el poder y la agencia; los espacios e identidades públicos, nacionales y domésticos, con sus articulaciones y tensiones; la memoria, la historia y el sentido del cambio; la globalización y la gobernabilidad; el género y la clase. En esta introducción destaco que juventud es construida como una categoría problemática, y el modo en que actúa como un “indicador social”, participando de la imaginación social. Al mismo tiempo, señalo cómo los jóvenes contribuyen a los debates y construcciones generacionales, y cómo las reflexiones sobre la juventud desafían nuestro pensamiento sobre la agencia. Os jovens são um tema cada vez mais necessário de ser estudado na África. Eles estão se envolvendo no espaço político de maneiras altamente complexas. P restar atenção à juventude é prestar atenção à complexidade da topologia da paisagem social , isto é: o poder e a agencia ; as identidades e espaços públicos, nacionais e domésticos , as suas articulações e desencontros ; a memória, a história e o sentido de mudança ; a globalização e o governo ; o gênero e a classe . Nesta introdução chamo a atenção para como juventude é construída como uma categoria problemática , e como ela funciona como um " indicador social " que envolve a imaginaç a o social.
