This observational study examined the prevalence and influencing factors of helmet, seatbelt, and child restraint system use in Sunchales, Argentina. A total of 1077 four-wheel motor vehicle occupants and 1293 motorcycle occupants were observed. Results showed that 42.2% of the occupants in four-wheel vehicles utilized seatbelts, with a higher prevalence among drivers (52.3%) compared to passengers (25.4%). Child restraint systems were observed only in 8% of the children under 11 years of age, and 36% of child passengers were positioned in the front seat. Further analysis indicated that seatbelt use among drivers were more common in automobiles and in areas of the city characterized by a higher quality of life. Among passengers, seatbelt use was greater among adults aged 60 and older, as well as those occupying the front seat. Helmet use was high among motorcycle drivers (96%) and passengers (74%), but proper helmet use decreased to 63.2% and 42.6%, respectively. Factors associated with increased helmet use among motorcycle drivers included being female, carrying passengers, riding cross or sport motorcycles, possessing a license plate, and driving in areas with a higher quality of life index. Among motorcycle passengers, greater helmet endorsement was associated with having license plate and riding in areas with higher quality of life index. These findings underscore the influence of quality of life in various city areas as a relevant factor for understanding individual differences related to the use of protective safety measures among road users.

Las conductas de protección vial son clave para reducir las lesiones y muertes en siniestros viales. Este estudio analiza la prevalencia del uso de cinturón, casco y sistemas de retención infantil, así como los factores humanos, vehiculares y ambientales asociados. Se llevó a cabo un estudio observacional en 12 puntos distribuidos en distintos barrios de la ciudad de Sunchales, Argentina. Se registró un total de 1077 ocupantes de vehículos de cuatro o más ruedas y 1293 ocupantes de motos. El 42,2% de los ocupantes de vehículos usaba cinturón, aunque el uso fue más elevado entre los conductores (52,3%) que entre los pasajeros (25,4%). En menores de 11 años, solo el 8% usaba SRI y el 36% viajaba en el asiento delantero. El uso de cinturón fue más frecuente en conductores particulares y en zonas de la ciudad con mayor índice de calidad de vida. Entre los pasajeros, se observó un mayor uso en adultos mayores de 60 años y en quienes viajaban en el asiento delantero. Por otro lado, el 96% de los conductores y el 74% de los pasajeros de motos usaba casco, aunque el uso correcto fue menor (63,2% y 42,6%, respectivamente). En los conductores, ser mujer, trasladar pasajeros y conducir motos tipo cross y ruta/deportiva se asoció con un mayor uso de casco. También se observó un uso mayor en conductores de motos con patente y en zonas de la ciudad con mayor calidad de vida. Entre los pasajeros, el uso de casco fue más alto en motos que circulaban con patente y en áreas con mayor calidad de vida. Se discuten los resultados, con especial atención a la calidad de vida como factor relevante para comprender las conductas de protección vial en los usuarios.   Os comportamentos de segurança no trânsito são fundamentais para reduzir as lesões e as mortes no trânsito. Este estudo analisa a prevalência do uso do cinto de segurança, do capacete e do sistema de retenção para crianças, além dos fatores humanos, veiculares e ambientais associados. Foi realizado um estudo observacional em 12 locais situados em diferentes bairros da cidade de Sunchales, Argentina. Foi registrado um total de 1.077 ocupantes de veículos com quatro ou mais rodas e 1.293 ocupantes de motocicletas. Um total de 42,2% dos ocupantes de veículos usava cinto de segurança, embora o uso fosse maior entre os motoristas (52,3%) do que entre os passageiros (25,4%). Entre as crianças com menos de 11 anos de idade, apenas 8% usavam SRI e 36% andavam no banco da frente. O uso do cinto foi maior entre os motoristas particulares e em áreas da cidade com um índice de qualidade de vida mais alto. Entre os passageiros, foi registrado maior uso entre os adultos com mais de 60 anos de idade e entre os que estavam no banco da frente. Por outro lado, 96% dos motociclistas e 74% dos passageiros de motocicletas usavam capacetes, embora o uso do capacete fosse menor (63,2% e 42,6%, respectivamente). Entre os motociclistas, ser do sexo feminino, transportar passageiros e pilotar motocicletas de terra e de estrada/esporte foram associados ao maior uso de capacete. O uso do capacete também foi maior entre os condutores de motocicletas com placa de identificação e em cidades com melhor qualidade de vida. Para os passageiros, o uso de capacete foi maior em motocicletas licenciadas e em áreas com melhor qualidade de vida.
