description This paper presents the results of a study that combines techno-typological and distributional aspects of the archaeological record recovered and observed at Los Barrancos archaeological quarry (Los Llanos de La Rioja, Argentina). This work is part of the initial results of a comprehensive research program dedicated to documenting the provenance and circulation of siliceous rocks in the eastern Pampean Ranges of Argentina and its adjacent plains. The case study was addressed through complementary perspectives, aimed at identifying possible areas of human activities and actions in the landscape. The red silica occurs in the form of thin veins within an aplite. This location under the surface conditioned the extractive activities and, to a certain extent, the production strategy of retouched artifactsThese results allowed us to identify sectors with different and partially complementary characteristics. In the areas where the bedrock outcrops, most of the activities were oriented to the quarrying of aplite and the subsequent separation of silica. In the low, flat, or mild sloping areas, there are sectors where a wider range of tasks was carried out. This included from a greater presence of core reduction and blank manufacture to the production of tools used in the processing of other resources. There is no evidence of tools with long production sequences or standardized forms. It is presumed that this stage took place in nearby sites from where raids were made to the site to obtain silica.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio que combina aspectos tecnotipológicos y distribucionales del registro arqueológico recuperado y observado en la cantera arqueológica Los Barrancos (Los Llanos de La Rioja, Argentina). La publicación forma parte de los resultados iniciales de un programa de investigación amplio, dedicado a documentar la procedencia y circulación de rocas sílices en las Sierras Pampeanas Orientales de Argentina y sus llanuras adyacentes. El caso de estudio fue abordado a través de miradas complementarias, orientadas a identificar posibles áreas de actividades y acciones humanas en el paisaje. La sílice, de color rojo, se presenta en forma de vetas poco espesas dentro de una aplita. Esta yacencia condicionó las actividades extractivas y, hasta cierto punto, la estrategia de producción de artefactos formatizados. Los resultados permitieron identificar sectores con características diferentes y, en alguna medida, complementarias. En los espacios donde aflora la roca de caja, la mayoría de las actividades estuvieron orientadas al canteo de la aplita y la posterior separación de la sílice. En las zonas bajas, planas o con poca pendiente se observan sectores de actividades en los cuales se realizaron tareas más amplias. Esto incluyó desde una mayor presencia de la reducción de núcleos y la generación de formas-base, hasta la producción de instrumentos utilizados en el procesamiento de otros recursos. No hay evidencias de instrumentos con secuencias de producción largas o formas estandarizadas.
