Com isso, os primeiros geógrafos formados no país começaram a ter destaque anos depois, interessando-se pelos mais diversos assuntos. Diante desta trama histórica formada no país, e tendo a necessidade de resgatar um personagem de destaque na história da ciência geográfica brasileira, o presente artigo tem por objetivo principal identificar os motivos que levaram o geógrafo brasileiro Hilgard O’Reilly Sternberg (1917-2011) a considerar a água como principal elemento edificador da paisagem natural e humana da Região Amazônica. Para isso, optou-se por selecionar três obras do autor: “A água e o homem na várzea do Careiro” (1956), “Sismicidade e Morfologia na Amazônia Brasileira” (1953) e “Vales Tectônicos na Planície Amazônica?” (1950).
