In the late XVIII century this authority system, reorganized in accord with new conditions and state needs, collapsed with the appearance of the Cortes in 1812.  Este artículo aborda como eje el sistema de autoridades -étnicas y españolas- al que estaban sujetos los pueblos de indios del partido de Cuenca (Ecuador), a lo largo del período colonial. El estudio permite observar que en el nivel estructural prevalecen las continuidades en el mismo desde la época toledana hasta 1778, fecha a partir de la cual se introdujeron las reformas borbónicas. El sistema de autoridades, rearticulado para acomodarse a las nuevas condiciones y necesidades estatales de fines del siglo XVIII, colapsó con el advenimiento de las Cortes en 1812.  Este artigo se concentra no sistema de autoridades -étnicas e espanholas- ao qual os povos indígenas do distrito de Cuenca (Equador) estiveram sujeitos durante todo o período colonial. O estudo revela que, em nível estrutural, prevalecem continuidades desde a era Toledo até 1778, data a partir da qual as reformas Bourbon foram introduzidas.
