description The public has been gaining controversial centrality in the contemporary agenda within the postmodern condition and the dominance of neoliberal globalization, which produced, between the end and the beginning of the millennium, the image of its retreatment. In this essay, I try to establish from an anthropological perspective certain conceptual bases for a dialectical approach to the public taking into account three of its registers: that of the specifically human communicative act, that of the socio-cultural universe traditionally covered by the ethnographic research of societies without a State and finally questioning the archaeological record for the historical conditions of the emergence of the public in structural terms with the first States. The search implies an opening of its restricted meaning to modern state and institutional apparatuses, although it is intended that what has been contributed can be projected towards the political field of contemporary studies on the public.

Lo público ha ido tomando centralidad controversial en la agenda contemporánea dentro de la condición posmoderna y el dominio de la globalización neoliberal, que se combinaron para que, entre fin y principio de milenio, se haya conformado una imagen de estar en retirada. En este ensayo trato de sentar ciertas bases conceptuales para un abordaje dialéctico de lo público desde la antropología a partir de tres de sus registros: el del acto comunicativo específicamente humano, el del universo sociocultural cubierto tradicionalmente por el registro etnográfico de sociedades sin Estado, y finalmente, interrogando al registro arqueológico por las condiciones históricas de surgimiento de lo público en términos estructurales con los primeros Estados. La búsqueda implica una apertura respecto de su sentido restringido a los aparatos estatales e institucionales modernos, si bien se intenta que lo aportado pueda proyectarse hacia el campo político de los estudios contemporáneos sobre lo público. O público vem ganhando centralidade controversa na agenda contemporânea dentro da condição pós-moderna e do domínio da globalização neoliberal, que se combinaram para que entre o final e o início do milênio se formasse uma imagem de recuo. Neste ensaio procuro estabelecer algumas bases conceituais para uma abordagem dialética do público a partir da Antropologia a partir de três de seus registros: o do ato comunicativo especificamente humano, o do universo sociocultural tradicionalmente percorrido pelo registro etnográfico de sociedades sem Estado e, finalmente, questionando o registro arqueológico para as condições históricas da emergência do público em termos estruturais com os primeiros Estados.
