This is a descriptive and analytical study, where the Red de Indicadores de Ciencia y Tecnología -Iberoamericana e Interamericana- (RICYT), the OECD and the WOS are used as data sources. The results are presented in three blocks. Firstly, Uruguay is located in the regional context through seven macro indicators; In this regard, it can be concluded that, in general, the country performs well in those indicators that are not dependent on relative size. Secondly, 19,679 publications were identified for the 40-year period considered; 60% of the production is concentrated in the last decade, and in the penultimate decade the most cited production. At a global level, Uruguay collaborates more frequently with the region and with Europe, rather than with the US, contrary to what is reported in the literature on Latin American countries. Finally, the thematic specialty of the country’s scientific production was identified: biological sciences and agricultural sciences, which positions Uruguay between the western and bio-environmental models. Se analiza la producción científica de Uruguay diacrónicamente en el periodo 1980-2019 con el fin de caracterizarla en el contexto de los países más productivos de la región. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo y analítico, donde se usan como fuentes de datos la Red de Indicadores de Ciencia y Tecnología -Iberoamericana e Interamericana (RICYT), la OCDE y la WOS. Los resultados se presentan en tres bloques. Primero se ubica a Uruguay en el contexto regional mediante siete indicadores macro; a este respecto se puede concluir que, en general, el país presenta un buen desempeño en aquellos indicadores que no son dependientes del tamaño relativo. En segundo lugar se identificaron 19.679 publicaciones para el periodo de 40 años considerado; en la última década se concentra el 60% de la producción, y en la penúltima década la producción más citada. A nivel global Uruguay colabora con mayor frecuencia con la región y con Europa, antes que con EE.UU contrariamente a lo que se reporta en la literatura sobre los países latinoamericanos.
