Afterwards, we will contest the idea that this association was seen as something necessarily negative. This study is based on the analysis of Benvinda, a character classified as mulata in the play A Capital Federal, written by Arthur Azevedo in 1897. Crossing information from the dramaturgical text and newspapers of the time, the article shows how the performance of actresses and the reception of this character would enhance the sensuality of the mulata. And this was a way through which women of color gained prominence and strength - on and off the stage. Este artículo se centra en los debates sobre determinismo racial y la moralidad femenina en el Río de Janeiro de finales del siglo XIX. El objetivo es, en primer lugar, presentar cómo, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la figura de la mulata fue asociada a la sensualidad, tanto en los debates raciales como en el teatro, en una relación dialógica. A continuación, trataremos de cuestionar la idea de que esta asociación era considerada como algo necesariamente negativo. Esta reflexión se basará en el análisis de la mulata Benvinda, personaje de la obra A Capital Federal, escrita en 1897 por Arthur Azevedo. Cruzando informaciones entre el texto dramatúrgico y los periódicos de la época, el artículo mostrará cómo la actuación de las actrices y la recepción de este personaje por el heterogéneo público de Río de Janeiro valoraban la sensualidad de la mulata.
